Maine Marijuana Laws
There has been a medical cannabis program in Maine since the 1990s, a program that was approved by referendum by residents of the state in 1999. Cannabis use will be legalized in Pine Tree State on October 1, 2020, following a year in which Gov. Mills created the Office of Marijuana Policy (OMP) under her leadership 2019. Following the citizen-led referendum in 2016, which legalized medicinal cannabis, the OMP took three years to form.

Following OMP guidelines, patients can possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and marijuana products and a maximum of 5 grams of marijuana concentrate.
Possessing up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and six plants at a time is allowed for patients and caregivers of medical marijuana users without the risk of penalty. Moreover, caregivers may cultivate up to six plants for each patient if they simultaneously care for up to five.
