Texas State Process for Getting Your Medical Marijuana Card
To be approved for the Texas Low THC program, you can speak with a certified physician at KIF Doctors and be approved for the program. Once you have been approved, you do not need to do anything else, and taking the next steps will be the responsibility of the KIF Doctors physician.
Physicians will require going through the following steps on your (patient) behalf.
- Fill out your name, address, and phone number in the physician profile in the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT).
- Upon entering your details, the state will verify that they are accurate.
Bring your state ID to your local dispensary to purchase your medicine. If a dispensary is near to your place, they will access CURT and verify your status as a valid patient in the state.
Texas Marijuana Laws & Legalization
Texas, the state of the United States, has made cannabis illegal for medical and recreational purposes, although low-THC CBD oil has been approved for epilepsy treatment since 2015. SB 399 was signed by Governor Abbot in June 2015, but the law was not implemented as fast as it should have been, and it remains one of the most restrictive laws in the country today. Some patients can obtain low-THC cannabis through this law. The product is considered low-THC if it contains a minimum of 10% cannabidiol and a maximum of 5% 9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Cannabis with low THC levels is eligible for medical use under Texas law. It is forbidden to smoke dried flowers or cultivate cannabis at home, limiting the use of cannabis to swallowable products.
To qualify for a Texas medical cannabis card in 2022, you must:
- Be a resident of Texas.
- Have been diagnosed by a licensed medical marijuana physician with a qualifying medical condition.
- Have two separate prescriptions for medical cannabis oil from qualified physicians.
The secondary physician does not need to communicate with the patient, and a second doctor may be consulted about the patient’s situation for authorization by the primary physician. Age is not a barrier, and registration or fee payment is not required under the law. However, CURT (The Compassionate Use Registry of Texas) will maintain patient data in the database to facilitate compassionate use. To continue access to tinctures of cannabis oil, patients must meet monthly with the neurosurgeon who approved their cannabis therapy to continue receiving the medication.
The Compassionate Use Act provides for the licensing of four dispensaries for medical marijuana. These are:

- Fluent – Schulenburg
According to Knox, Compassionate Cultivation, Surterra, and Fluent, 11 dispensaries are open throughout Texas to fill your cannabis prescription as of 2021. Becoming a Caregiver in Texas
In Texas, caregivers do not need to go through a formal application process. It is possible to have medicinal marijuana prescriptions filled and supplied by a caregiver or legal guardian for patients who need assistance obtaining or using medicinal cannabis. Medical cannabis prescriptions can be filled at any licensed dispensary in Texas by the patient’s caregiver/guardian under 18 years of age.
