1. Make an appointment
The best way to see a medical cannabis doctor in NY is to choose KIF Doctors and schedule an appointment for a convenient time. Our team is standing by, waiting to help you set up a time and date for your consultation.
A Medical marijuana doctor will be able to assess your ailments and answer any questions you might have about the effects of medical marijuana on your conditions for 10-15 minutes.

2. Consult with an MMJ doctor
After your doctor approves you, you will receive a “Patient ID.” With this number and the information you received from KIF Doctors, you can register online with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and complete your application online. Click the “Medical Marijuana Management System” link once logged in to the state portal. Registering a patient or caregiver is easy; follow the instructions on the website.
Your identity must be verified by entering a 9-digit number from your driver’s license or state identification card (uploading a copy of your ID will slow down the approval process by several minutes). If you want to use this number to prove that you are a resident of New York State, you can either upload one of these documents:
- Please provide a copy of your last two months’ pay stub.
- An up-to-date copy of your lease agreement is required.
- An updated mortgage statement from the past two months must be provided.
- Two months’ worth of utility bills.
- An NYC ID card is required.
- A copy of your current Social Security correspondence.
- Two months’ worth of practitioner/hospital bills.
For medical cannabis card in New York, the $50 application fee has been permanently waived by the state.
3. Seek Approval
Within 1-2 weeks after getting approved and registering with the New York DOH, you will receive your medical marijuana card. Then, you can start purchasing medical marijuana from the authorized dispensary.
The temporary medical cannabis card will appear after you complete your online medical cannabis card application and click submit. For up to 30 days after receiving the card, you can use the printout and your ID to purchase medical cannabis. It will take 7-10 days for your permanent ID card to arrive in the mail.
A licensed physician must recertify cannabis patients in New York every year. Upon expiration of your certification, KIF Doctors will contact you to help you schedule a renewal appointment.

New York Medical Marijuana
During the Governor Andrew Cuomo administration, medical cannabis was legalized in the Big Apple and the rest of the Empire State. In 2019, Governor Cuomo and other East Coast governors hosted the 1st Pot Summit to discuss legalizing cannabis recreationally.
According to Cuomo, medical cannabis can be used to treat opioid use disorder in 2018 and PTSD in 2019. The governor believes recreational cannabis would solve many woes and improve the physical well-being of thousands of citizens who suffer from qualifying medical conditions. As for recreational cannabis, Cuomo predicted it would generate 1.3 billion dollars in taxes in 2019, but it did not materialize.
Guidelines for laboratory testing of packaged medical cannabis products were released by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) on May 3, 2019. It will be possible to test capsules, pills, oral sprays, tablets, powders, tinctures, topical lotions, vape cartridges, male and female cannabis flowers, and more products that are supposed to be tested. Lab accreditation through New York State is used to verify the potency of the cannabinoids, the stability of the product, and the presence of mycotoxins and bacteria. This is a significant development since it confirms that medical cannabis products are safe for patients to use, which is excellent news for us.
It was announced in September of 2020 that New York State released guidelines on conducting research for medical cannabis programs in the state, which will now be conducted in conjunction with Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) approval. Research on cannabis funded privately and federally was subject to the same regulations.
As of March 2021, recreational marijuana sales will not be legal unless Governor Cuomo signs the legislation. Under the law, marijuana can be possessed, obtained, purchased, or transported up to three ounces by people over 21. Retail sales will be subject to a 13% tax starting April 1, 2023.
A date for recreational marijuana sales has not been formally determined, but it is expected to begin in 2023.
The state of New York is also taking steps to regulate hemp-based products, including label requirements, testing requirements, and manufacturing requirements.
Qualifying Conditions
New York’s medical cannabis program no longer requires patients to have a specific medical condition to obtain a medical card as of January 24, 2022. If a physician feels medical cannabis may benefit a patient, they can prescribe it for that condition. Patients must also prove they are residents of the state of New York and possess a state ID card or driver’s license. The state has permanently waived the application fee for medical cannabis cards. Until 2020, it was $50 a year. In the meantime, a temporary registration card will be issued to the patient by the state while a medical cannabis state card is prepared and sent to them.
Applying for New York State Medical Marijuana Card is easier with KIF Doctors
Let’s get started with the medical marijuana card process in New York:
- You can download the PDF certificate from the patient dashboard available on KIF Doctors.
- Log in to the New York State website https://my.ny.gov/ by entering your username and password. For those without an account and who want to set up an NY.gov ID before creating your account, you will have to click the “Don’t have an Account?” button.
- Creating a personal account is as easy as the following steps.
- Make sure you use capital letters and numbers when answering secret questions and entering your password.
- Keep your password and user ID safe.
- The Logout button lets you log out. Here you go, your MY.NY.gov account is now created.
- Validate your login credentials.
- Go to “Health Applications” and click on it.
- Go to the Medical Cannabis Data Management System (MCDMS) link.
- Selecting “Start New Registration,” you will begin the registration process.
- To register, follow these steps.
- The Department will issue a temporary registry identification card (ID card) through the My.NY.gov account after the approval of applicant’s registration. The temporary identification card may be used with a government-issued photo identification to purchase cannabis until the applicant receives his/her permanent registry identification card (ID card).
- When a practitioner’s certification expires, their registration expires.
- It is necessary to re-register patients and caregivers every time they receive a new certification number.
- Once a new certification number is issued, the patient and caregiver must re-register with the certification program. Medical marijuana products must be purchased at a registered organization’s dispensing facility by patients with their registry ID cards and certifications to obtain approved medical marijuana products from that organization. When caregivers purchase approved medical marijuana products for their patients, they must bring their registry ID cards and patient certifications.
Medical Marijuana in New York: How to Become a Patient
As a medical marijuana patient in New York, you must follow three basic steps. First, you will schedule an appointment with a NY doctor to review your condition(s) and ailment(s). The second step is to receive a medical cannabis recommendation from a medical marijuana doctor licensed in New York and register with the Department of Health once you are evaluated and approved. Once you receive a medical cannabis recommendation, you can submit your NY medical marijuana card application online with the New York Department of Health. The medical marijuana card you will receive in a week will allow you to purchase cannabis from New York dispensaries.
Registering a Caregiver in New York
To become certified, caregivers must also demonstrate that they are New York residents and have a valid driver’s license or state identification card. For the caregiver to be approved for reimbursement, they must also be listed on the patient’s application for reimbursement. On a similar basis to the patient, a caregiver can have a certain amount of medical cannabis at a time on behalf of the patient, which they have sworn to help by assisting in the use of medical cannabis.
The Office of Cannabis Management allows certified patients to designate up to five caregivers when applying for their ID cards. These caregivers will assist the patient in obtaining and administering medical marijuana to them before receiving their ID cards. As a caregiver, one must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must be 21 years old or older unless the NYSDOH has granted special permission.
- Applicants must reside in New York State and possess a driver’s license or identification card issued by New York State.
- An independent physician must certify the patent.
- The caregiver must register with the Department of Health once the patient’s application is approved so that the caregiver can receive a registry identification card, which can then be used to acquire medical marijuana on behalf of the patient following the approval of the application. Patients can follow the same registration instructions available for caregivers, and they can be found here: cannabis.ny.gov, which gives instructions on registering for the program.
The caregivers must also pay the $50 application fee like the patient unless they can prove that they have a financial hardship and that fee can be waived. As part of its commitment to improving access to healthcare, New York will no longer charge application fees beginning in September 2020.

Registry ID card renewal
It is based on the patient’s certification that determines the caregiver’s registry ID card length. Therefore, a caregiver’s and a patient’s registry cards will expire simultaneously. Once a patient’s certification is renewed by their physician and the caregiver’s registry card is renewed, the caregiver can renew the caregiver’s card.
The following two expenses are permitted to be collected from a patient by a designated caregiver:
A patient’s medical marijuana product under the approval of the dispensary must be purchased at the cost of between $100 and $200;
There are also reasonable costs associated with transporting and delivering medical marijuana products to the patients that must be paid for by the patient.
There are also some requirements that each designated caregiver must meet:
- For each certified patient, an ID card must be obtained.
- A maximum of five certified patients may be treated.
- Each certified patient is not allowed to possess more than the allowed amount of medical cannabis at any given time.
- Patients must only possess medical marijuana forms that have been specifically prescribed for their use.
- To deliver medical cannabis to anyone who is not registered as a patient, the individual must not knowingly share, sell, trade, or otherwise deliver the drug.
There are the same reporting requirements for patients mentioned above for providers and returning registry ID cards issued in connection with patients who are no longer eligible for the registry.
Possession/Use Limits and Cultivation
Cannabis may be possessed in various forms by patients and caregivers at home or out in public for up to three ounces. As opposed to the previous 30-day limit, you can now purchase medical cannabis for up to 60 days. The same places where you can smoke cigarettes are also permitted to smoke cannabis:
- At meals or in designated smoking areas in foodservice establishments.
- Federal property.
- The Clean Indoor Air Act prohibits smoking in certain places.
- Cigar bars.
Until the state issues regulations for growing cannabis at home later this year, certified medical marijuana patients could not grow cannabis at home. Cannabis won’t be legal for those over 21 without a medical card until late 2023. A maximum of six cannabis plants will be allowed to a person when they are permitted to grow cannabis, consisting of three immature plants and three mature plants. Furthermore, they will also be able to legally possess up to 5 pounds of cannabis at home. However, outside their homes, they will only be permitted to possess 3 ounces of cannabis.

The Best Places To Visit In New York After You Have Taken Your Medicine
New York is the world’s most densely populated city and America’s Big Apple. New York City is home to Broadway, renowned museums, top chef restaurants, A-listers clubs, Central Park, several famous art centers and museums, a philharmonic orchestra, and top chef restaurants. Its culture and art history date back to the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France located on the waters within the city’s five boroughs. Hundreds of miles of land stretch up to five hours north of New York City alone. Along its northern border, New York State offers an opportunity to visit not just the world’s most famous city but other countries.
New York City
With so little space, there is so much to say. It is impossible to experience the Big Apple in only a few days or weeks; locals live there, and millions of tourists return yearly for the same reason. Most visitors to the city begin their visit at New York City’s most famous skyscraper, the Empire State Building. After, a trip to Central Park anytime of the year becomes the memory of a lifetime. A ferry to the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island is also one of the most popular tourist travels, with locals still enjoying the trip across the Hudson River. An annual event like the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony adds a new spin to any trip to New York, such as seeing a Broadway show, standing in awe in Times Square, or shopping on Fifth Avenue. Take a trip to any of the best dispensaries in the state next time you visit.
Lake Ontario
Some of the most impressive coastal views in New York State can be found at the parks and beaches along Lake Ontario. Canada lies on the other side of Lake Ontario, which makes it easy for locals and tourists to travel across the famous waterway. Many people live in the region during the summer, renting lakeside cottages, or checking into quaint beds and breakfasts. Fishing, boating, skiing, and swimming are all popular summer activities, but skiing on the lake’s snow-capped mountains during winter is also quite enjoyable.
Buffalo
Buffalo is renowned for its architecture, including the famous Martin residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Buffalo is the second-largest city in the U.S., just hours away from New York City, the country’s largest. Canalside, the city’s fully revitalized waterfront to meet any patron’s needs, is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors. In addition, there are theaters, museums, and parks. For a comprehensive experience of the New York City metropolis, two-day multi-rail tours combine a day trip to the Big Apple with a day trip to Buffalo.
